Sometimes a name can say it all – West University was named for the proximity to what was at the time “Rice Institute”, which later became Rice University. West University Homes are a combination of the original 1020’s bungalows to the larger and newer built homes of today. One unique feature of the homesites in West University is the smaller square footage of usable areas due to the smaller homes that started this community. West University was developed in 1917 by former Tennessee governor Ben Hooper. Lilly Nicholson, an English helped name the streets after famous authors and universities. Due to a dispute over utilities, West University Place incorporated in 1924. Current day government in West University operates in a non-partisan fashion with council made up of the mayor and four council members. This close knit community has several entertainment areas including recreation center, little league baseball fields, parks, and more.
